Demonstrating compliance

Helpful advice for Red Tractor members

As a Red Tractor farmer, we you take pride in producing high-quality food and ensuring it meets Red Tractor standards. Your dedication to best practices helps maintain trust in British farming.

We understand that receiving a non-conformance can be frustrating. To help you stay on track and ensure a smooth assessment, we’ve put together some practical advice on how to avoid common pitfalls and maintain compliance.

Health and Safety Policy – all members need to have one of these. Find out more about this standard here, and download a free template and worked example from the Health and Safety Executive’s website.

Medicines training – double check that at least one person has been trained on responsible medicines use and has a certificate of competence/attendance dated no earlier than October 2016. Find a list of training providers in your area here.

BVD – make sure you have a BVD management plan included within your health plan. Download a health plan template here.

PPP store signage – make sure you have a general warning sign, plus a ‘no smoking’ and ‘no naked flames’ signs displayed next to the store entrance. Here’s an example:

NRoSO points – make sure your points are up to date by logging on to your NRoSo account.

Housing – check that there are no sharp edges or projections that could harm livestock.

Johne’s Disease – make sure an accredited vet has a written plan for managing this disease. Find out more here.

NRoSO points – make sure your points are up to date by logging on to your NRoSo account.

Pesticide residue testing – if you complete your own testing or rely upon customer tests, make sure you’ve read the relevant standards to check that you are prepared. Where changes to testing frequency are needed, it may not be practical to backfill. If this is the case, a plan to ensure future compliance is needed.

First aid training – check that at least one person is trained in first aid, using any training provider that you feel best meets your business needs. We recommend using the St John Ambulance First Aid Calculator to help.

Antibiotic usage – Make sure you have submitted your total antibiotic usage to eMB.

Vermin control – be sure that a quarterly site survey has been done and that any vegetation growing around buildings is controlled. Download a vermin control site survey template here.

Enrichment – make sure that enrichment has been provided in farrowing pens to sows and piglets and the right combinations of enrichment types are provided. Find out more about suitable enrichment on the AHDB website.

Training – double check that everyone who is responsible for carrying out pig euthanasia has had their competency reassessed by the vet within the past two years, including those who are already signed off as trained and competent.

Poultry Passport – make sure you’re using British Poultry Training as your formal route for training for all workers, and all training is up to date.

Housing – check that you have a written policy in place for cleaning and disinfecting your bulk feed bin, including a risk assessment.
